The Baby Start Sperm Quality Test measures whether the number of sperm cells is above or below 20 million sperm cells per millilitre (ml) sperm. This quantity is recommended by WHO. A result of below 20 million sperm cells per ml is a sign of low fertility.
The test colours the sperm cells in a sperm sample with a blue colour which is compared with a blue reference colour on the test cassette. Depending on the strength of the blue colour, there are greater or fewer than 20 million sperm cells in the sperm sample.
